A world-class event with a strong heritage, in a relaxed setting
The Aegon International is played in the idyllic setting of Devonshire Park in Eastbourne. The tournament offers many of the world’s top singles and doubles players a final chance to prepare for The Championships, Wimbledon, which starts the following week. The event hosts both a long established WTA Premier tournament for women, which has been held on this site since 1974, and an ATP 250 Series tournament for men, which began in 2009 when it became the Aegon International.
The tournament traditionally attracts some of the most famous names in the women’s game, with Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin, Jana Novotna and Martina Navratilova among famous past champions.
In 2013, 12 of the top 20 women players featured, including Agnieszka Radwanska (POL), Na Li (CHI), Angelique Kerber (GER) and Caroline Wozniacki (DEN). The tournament always attracts a strong British contingent and this year saw players Laura Robson, Heather Watson, Elena Baltacha and Kyle Edmund all progress to the 2nd round - a feat not achieved since 2007.
The 2013 ladies’ winner was Elena Vesnina (RUS) and Feliciano Lopez (SPA) lifted the men’s title.
The Aegon International is broadcast by BBC and Eurosport.
One of Britain’s top events
The Aegon International has an impressive history and with the world-class players on display it’s no surprise the event attracts a big audience and ever-growing crowds. And the open venue makes for a relaxed atmosphere where fans can get close to the action and mingle with the players. We’re delighted to sponsor this long-running event, along with the Aegon Championships (London) and the Aegon Classic (Birmingham), at such an exciting time in British Tennis.
