AEGON Championships gets underway at The Queen’s Club
This year’s AEGON Championships takes place from Monday 7 to Sunday 13 June.
Taking place on the beautifully manicured lawns of The Queen’s Club, London, this world-class event traditionally attracts the top players from men’s tennis, giving them their first chance of the year to compete on grass in the run-up to Wimbledon.
Top players in action
This year’s line-up features some of the world’s best players, with British number one Andy Murray back to defend the title he won last year. He’ll face tough competition from former champions Rafael Nadal and four-time winner Andy Roddick along with world number three Novak Djokovic, aiming to win his first grass-court title. They’ll be joined by a host of other top players including Fernando Verdasco, Jo Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Cilic.
Murray (pictured here on his way to winning last year’s AEGON Championships) knows the world-class player field will make it tough to retain the title which he won without dropping a set. On the way to the title he overcame former French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero in the semi-finals and then beat James Blake in the final. Murray holds the event in high regard, adding:
‘If I play my best I've got a chance of successfully defending the title and doing well at Wimbledon.
I know it won't be easy because they are going to have a strong field this year at Queen’s, and Wimbledon always has the best players in the world. It's a great time of the year though and I'm really looking forward to it.’
Team AEGON players to compete
Team AEGON and AEGON GB Davis Cup team duo James Ward and Jamie Baker have both been awarded wild cards for the event giving them the chance to compete alongside the top players in the main draw. Team AEGON are the top British players selected by the LTA to receive the highest level of support.
