AEGON Schools Tennis reaches one million children
Since we became Lead Partner of British Tennis in 2009, over one million school children* have benefitted from the AEGON Schools Tennis programme.
So far, over 8,000 free AEGON Schools Tennis kits have been given out across the UK. With an average of 150 pupils per school getting access to each kit, that means over a million 4 to 11 year olds have benefitted so far. Check our interactive map to see how many have been given out in your region.
The kits contain all the equipment and coaching resources teachers need to overcome the usual barriers associated with teaching tennis in schools like lack of space or lack of good quality tennis equipment.
Research by the Tennis Foundation shows that many teachers don’t have the confidence to teach the sport. To support them, teachers also receive a free training session run by the LTA and Tennis Foundation to show them how to teach the key skills and deliver the programme to their pupils.
Throughout our partnership we’ll continue working with the LTA and Tennis Foundation to help give out even more free kits giving as many children as possible the chance to start playing tennis.
Support from the top players
Several members of Team AEGON have shown their support including Melanie South and Georgie Stoop who have visited schools to see the programme in action. And they’ve been impressed with what they’ve seen, after seeing the course in action, Melanie South commented:
‘To encourage more kids to take up the sport and stay involved, we want to make tennis more accessible at school and we want them to have a quality experience of this great sport, and the session I saw today was exactly that.’
