Maia Lumsden wins AEGON Junior InternationalAEGON FutureStar Maia Lumsden (pictured here in action at the National Tennis Centre), aged just 12 years old won her first 14 and under Tennis Europe title at the AEGON Junior International, which took place at Craiglockhart Tennis Centre, Edinburgh.

The young star, from Scotland, produced top-class tennis to record a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory over fellow AEGON FutureStar Jazzi Plews in an all British girls’ final.

The win was all the more impressive as the talented young star quickly had to alter her game, after rain forced play indoors. Maia couldn’t hide her excitement after taking the title, saying:

‘I'm really pleased because Jazzi is a really good player and hits the ball hard. I prefer to play on clay but because it was raining we had to play indoors, which made it quite hard because of the fast courts.’

The win is the latest in what has been a fantastic 2010 for Lumsden. In February, she lifted the 12 and under Open Championship trophy in Auray, France, joining an illustrious list of winners including Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Rafael Nadal and British number one Andy Murray. Prior to that, she had taken the AEGON Junior Grand Prix Masters title at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.
