Talent shines through at the AEGON British Junior Nationals

The AEGON British Junior National Championships, which took place in London and Bournemouth over the last fortnight, is the most prestigious tournament for juniors in the UK.

Britain’s best young players compete against each other in six age categories and wins here can be a strong sign of potential. Andy Murray and Tim Henman both picked up junior national titles as they progressed their careers. So we’re delighted to see some great results from the players we support through the Team AEGON and AEGON FutureStars programmes.

Highlights from the British Junior Nationals

In the 18 and under event, the boys’ singles final was an all-Team AEGON contest between Richard Gabb and Lewis Burton, with Gabb winning in straight sets. He also won the doubles title with partner Ashley Hewitt.

Meanwhile, in the girls’ singles, Team AEGON’s Jennifer Ren (pictured left) came runner-up in the final to wildcard (and AEGON FutureStar) Pippa Horn, while her sister Jessica picked up the doubles title with Ruth Seaborne.

There were also strong performances in the 16 and under category. Katy Dunne (pictured below), the girls’ top seed, won a close-fought final against Georgia Craven. She dropped the opening set to love before battling back to take the title 0-6, 7-5, 6-1.

In the boys’ event, AEGON FutureStar Jonathan O’Mara was crowned champion, continuing the impressive run that saw him knock out top seed Luke Bambridge at the semi-final stage.

Meanwhile, at the 14 and under event, the singles titles were won by two more AEGON FutureStars, Joshua Sapwell and Alannah Griffin.

Gabb, Burton, Hewitt, the Ren sisters, Dunne and Bambridge are all members of Team AEGON, the elite group of players selected by the LTA to receive the top level of funding and support. Horn, Craven, O’Mara, Sapwell and Griffin are AEGON FutureStars, the next level of training and support for emerging talent.
