The British team looked the favourites going into the three-day tie at Braehead Arena in Glasgow, with a strong team which included world no. 4 Andy Murray and world no. 21 doubles team Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins.

On Friday, Murray and British no. 2 James Ward secured wins in their opening singles rubbers against Sebo Kiss and Attila Balazs respectively, to go 2-0 up. This left GB needing just one more win from the remaining three matches to earn promotion to Europe/Africa Zone Group 1 of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.

Fleming and Hutchins did not disappoint. The Wimbledon and US Open quarter-finalists put in a strong performance to beat the Hungarian pair 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to give GB an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the tie.

On Sunday, Murray and Fleming played in front of a sell-out crowd to win both their matches and achieve a 5-0 whitewash over the Hungarians.

The Captain of the AEGON GB Davis Cup Team Leon Smith paid tribute to the team after the tie: ‘I am really proud of the guys and the whole backroom team. It was really hard work but a good weekend. I thought today [Sunday] was excellent. Even though it was dead rubbers, it was a really great atmosphere.’

As team sponsor, we’d also like to congratulate everyone involved.

The AEGON GB Davis Cup Team will next be in action in their new group from 10-12 February 2012.
