Team AEGON at Australian Open

Nine Team AEGON players were in action at the Australian Open. Sixteen year-old Laura Robson reached the finals of the Australian Open Junior Girls Championship for the second year running before losing out to Karolina Pliskova. She also reached the last eight of this year’s Women’s Doubles with Australian partner Sally Peers before being overcome by 15th seeds Maria Kirilenko and Agnieszka Radwanska.

In the Women’s Singles, Elena Baltacha reached the third round for the second time in her career. On the way she recorded a great win over Kateryna Bondarenko in the second round, who is ranked over 50 places higher, before finally succumbing to second seed and former world number one Dinara Safina.

British number two, Katie O’Brien, reached the second round, losing to eighth seed Jelena Jankovic.

In the Men’s Doubles event, all-British pairing Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski won their first main draw match at a Grand Slam, before being defeated in a close-fought second round match against Michael Kohlmann and Jarkko Nieminen.

Ross Hutchins, playing with Australia’s Jordan Kerr, lost out in the first round to the seventh seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski.

In the Boys Singles, Oliver Golding, reached the third round before losing to Australian James Duckworth. Tom Allen and Jack Carpenter reached the quarter finals of the Boys Doubles where they lost out to Kevin Krawietz and Dominick Schulz of Germany.
